The rules in brief
You drive on the right and overtake on the left. A valid EU or UK driving licence is enough. Carry your licence and ID with you. On roundabouts, traffic already on the roundabout has priority.

Alcohol, phones and seatbelts
The alcohol limit is 0.5 grams per litre of blood, and 0.3 for drivers who have held a licence for less than two years. Phone calls are hands-free only; earphones are banned. Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone in the car.

Compulsory equipment
A Spanish-registered car should carry a V16 emergency beacon, a reflective vest within reach of the driver and a spare wheel or repair kit. Check this when you pick the car up.

Child seats and height rules
Children under 135 cm need an approved child seat or booster and must travel in the back. Reserve a seat in advance; they are not always available on the spot.

The Ibiza road network
The links between the airport, Ibiza Town, San Antonio and Santa Eulalia are wide and easy to follow. There are no toll roads in Ibiza.

Narrow and unsurfaced roads to the calas
The roads down to coves such as Cala d'Hort, Cala Salada and Cala Xarraca are often narrow and winding. Many rental contracts ban unsurfaced roads, and damage to the underside or tyres is usually not covered there.
